Loretto, Pa. – Freshman midfielder Fabio Assumpção (Alves, Brazil/Colegio Batista Brasileiro) found the net for the first time as a Dragon and helped to lift his new team to their first victory of the season, a 1-0 shutout of St. Francis (Pa.). Assumpção knocked home a rebound from eight yards out in the 53rd minute to put Drexel on top. The win improved the Dragons' record to 1-1 on the season.
Drexel fended off 13 shots by the Red Flash (1-2) and also turned away five corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Cory Robertson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) made four difficult saves in goal and was aided by two team saves in his first shutout of the season. St. Francis packed the offensive side of the field after falling behind in the second half and narrowly missed tying the game when Robertson charged out to challenge a Red Flash attacker. With the net open, Brandon Fischer (Baldwin, Md./Baldwin) threw himself in front of a driven ball to preserve the Drexel lead which would hold up for the victory.
Drexel won despite being outshot 13-8. Each team earned five corner kick opportunities. The Dragons return to Philadelphia for their home opener against Siena on Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before hosting UMBC, La Salle and Howard in the Drexel Invitational Tournament this coming weekend.
